“Forum on Age-friendly Housing and Health Promotion” in Taipei brought leaders of different sectors and more than 200 attendees together for a healthy housing future for all
Housing is an important aspect that influences physical, mental and social health. Presentation
Housing is an important aspect that influences physical, mental and social health. Population aging brings about new needs in housing design to support aging in place and holistic well-being for the elderly. Among the 8 domains of WHO’s guide to age-friendly city development, housing is the third domain, and has interactions with other domains, such as the creation of accessible outdoor environments that support independence, the transport and mobility that support social activities, and the community and health services.
Although there is growing interest and investment into new constructions and renovation in response to population aging, the needs to support active aging, social participation and health equity are often neglected. This 2020 Forum on Age-friendly Housing and Health Promotion focuses on achieving healthy residential environments for all, is co-organized by Health & Sustainable Development Foundation and Foundation of Universal Design Education, both based in the region, in collaboration with the International Union for Health Promotion & Education (IUHPE), the Task Force on Health Promoting Hospitals & Age-Friendly Health Care, and New Taipei City Government, with three important aims:
-
To shape a common ground on what matters in healthy aging and what to consider in developing age-friendly housing;
-
To share principles and insights from other countries’ age-friendly housing experiences;
-
To share progress, including successes and failures, in age-friendly housing initiatives in the region.
This forum will be held on July 19 (Sunday), 2020 in the grand lecture hall of New Taipei City Hall, followed by a field tour to 3 cases on July 20 (Monday).
Speakers include Shu-Ti Chiou (IUHPE Vice President for Capacity Building), Susan Wright (senior member of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter Design for Aging (DFA) Committee), Ran-Chou Chen (Commissioner of the Department of Health, New Taipei City), and several honorable representatives from key fields.
