Altogether there are now about 70 Safe Community projects identified throughout the world. Most of them are located to the Nordic countries, Western Europe, Northern America and Australia.

However there has been a growing interest from more than 50 countries so far to develop Safe Community strategies. One way to meet the interest has been to organize a network among the more active and stable programmes.

Indicators have been developed, and they are used in a screening process to find the most responsible programmes, i.e. those who are willing to take national and international responsibility for further dissemination of ideas and experiences. Agreements between the Collaborating Centre and the leadership of seventeen communities have been signed' Wang Khoi in Thailand; Toulouse in France; Esbjerg in Denmark; Castlemilk and Corkerhill in Glasgow, U.K.; Lidkoping, Motala, Falkoping, Falun and Krokom in Sweden; Illawarra, Hume, Noarlunga, La Trobe, and Parkes in Australia; Harstad in Norway and Fort McMurray in Canada.

The network organizes yearly international conferences as well as seminars, produces a newsletter and makes site visits and exchanges experiences with potential new members.

The Safe Community Network has decided to start the programme based on quality rather than quantity. It is important that the universal direction of the concept covering cross-sectorial safety activities at the local level for all can direct future development. On the other hand, the membership should not be exclusive as to prohibit a better global representation.
