BACKGROUND: The Swedish district-nursing is guided by laws and agreements on the local level. Health promotion and disease prevention are mentioned as important parts.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to investigate what health promotion and disease prevention mean to the Swedish district nurse, and how she/he effect it.

METHOD: The study is qualitative and descriptive. The data is gathered by open interviews.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION: The comprehended meaning, the content and the practical work of the district nurse is described in the result. Furthermore the impediments of health promotion and disease prevention is described.

The Swedish district nurse doesn't separate health promotion from disease prevention. The comprehended meaning of these two concepts is identical. In the practical work the disease prevention is dominating. The district nurse mentions lack of time and inadequate knowledge as impediments. In a continuing study I investigate the health promotion in the district nursing practice. I mainly interview district nurses who are involved in special projects of health promotive character.

As a tutor of the district nurse training it is important to analyse the knowledge and the practical methods that exists, to clarify and develop them furthermore.
