The aim of this study was to study the effects on eating behaviour of a theoretically-based nutritional curriculum for mid-adolescents, hypothesising that effects should be larger for participating students compared to controls, and even larger for students already part of an ongoing community intervention programme. Children in the 8th grade (14 years old) from Stockholm county were randomly selected on a school class basis. The study group consisted of 30 classes (ten controls). Half of the students were from municipalities with a community intervention program targeting eating habits, half from non-active municipalities. Eating habits, protein, fat, fibre and energy intake were estimated with a 24h recall and a specially designed questionnaire before and after the intervention. The study was conducted during spring 1992. Effects on knowledge and awareness in both intervention groups were indicated, but no effect on dietary intake. Effects were not greater for children in the community intervention municipalities.
