Abstract

The study focusses on the dilemmas regarding the priorities, focus and legitimacy of Health Promotion practice, aimed at men. It unpacks the contested nature of Health Promotion, and in doing so, draws on the themes of equity, partnership, social justice and policy change. The increasingly topical issue of Men's Health is addressed. A comparison of male and female patterns of mortality, morbidity and lifestyles raises pertinent questions regarding the planning, implementatyion and evaluation of Health Promotion strategies for men. The study argues that there is a connection between men's apparent lack of concern for their own health, and relationships between men and women in the family, and wider social groupings. The study explores ways of drawing men more fully into the issues of Health Promotion and Community Health, by comparing different ways of working, both in the U.K. and other countries. Pertinent ways of evaluating this type of work are also explored.
