Abstract

In spite of the nominal similarity, Health Promotion and Safety Promotion emanate from separate traditions within Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Traditionally, health promotion has largely been population and lifestyle oriented, whereas the approaches within Safety Promotion have focused to a greater degree on societal structures, public policies, engineering, legislation, and the administration of justice. The Safe Community Movement can be seen as an effort to merge these two traditions at the community level. The aim of this presentation is to review the main features of Health Promotion and Safety Promotion, to compare their theoretical frameworks, and to suggest areas for further cross-fertilization.
