Abstract The aim of this paper is to present the possibilities and challenges that is within the frame of using internet when implementing a conference also aiming at participants involvement already from the planning phase of the conference. Thus the objectives are first to present the facilities created on the Internet , and second to discuss some insights from this process. The vision of the conference was to create possibilities to be involved in the planning phase shaping the programme and discuss the abstracts. The methods used have been use of Internet facilities. Web pages continuously up-dated have been in use since 16th of January 1998. In addition three types of discussion fora were established. An open chat area, a list for those interested, and thirdly a "web chat" forum with the possibilities to write directly at a web page where you can see what has been discussed earlier. In order to get information about the participants reviewing of the WebPages of abstracts some questions were raised about where people come from and if they aimed at participating at the conference. Results: The 5th of August 2888 persons has visited the main webpage of the conference. In May special webpages were presented for accepted abstracts. 415 readers have looked at these webpages in the beginning of August, and almost 90 % have been participants of the conference. The majority comes from the Nordic countries and fifty percent come from Sweden, 14 % from Finland, 5 and 2 percent from Norway and Denmark, respectively. The majority of participants have also used the webpages when providing their applications for participation or abstracts. However, the available discussion fora have not been used during the pre-conference time period.
