IUHPE 70: Celebrating 70 years of advancing global health promotion
IUHPE commemorated an important anniversary in 2021, marking 70 years since its foundation in 1951. Throughout the year, we celebrated the leadership role played by IUHPE in shaping global developments through strategic actions on progressing health promotion policy, practice and research in collaboration with our global network of members and partners. We invite you to learn more about the anniversary activities and celebrations!
This is a significant milestone in the life of the organization. It afforded an important opportunity to reflect on the advances made in health promotion globally over the last 70 years and to advance debate and dialogue on future directions. The 70th anniversary also provided a strategic space to consider how we can expand the reach of the organization and ensure that it is well positioned to provide strategic leadership in advancing health promotion over the next 70 years. We will continue to advocate for the strengthening of health promotion systems that lead to enabling structures, processes and enhanced capacity for the implementation of health promotion.
In celebrating the 70th anniversary, there were a range of activities throughout the year, including a webinar series, regional celebratory events and conferences, and a special publication of Global Health Promotion, which can be accessed for free for a limited time . Learn more about the 11th IUHPE European Regional Conference “Health Promotion: Transformative action in a changing Europe” (15-16 June 2021), the special anniversary event that took place on its second day which can be viewed on our YouTube channel, and the 6th International Conference on Salutogenesis “Advancing Salutogenesis towards thriving Societies” (17-18 June 2021).
IUHPE 70 PUBLICATIONS:
Global Health Promotion, 70th Anniversary Special Issue
The Global Health Promotion Anniversary special issue provides an opportunity to critically reflect on the evolution and future development of health promotion and to consider IUHPE’s role in advancing the field now and into the future. We invite you to read guest editor and IUHPE President Professor Margaret M. Barry’s editorial to learn more about the collection of papers, commentaries and perspectives that come together in this publication. The table of contents, editorial board list of members, and full articles are available here.
Please note that access to the entire issue is free until July 2022.
Anniversary Booklet
In commemoration of IUHPE’s 70th anniversary celebrated last year, we have created an Anniversary Booklet that was released during the 24th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion. This piece of work reflects on important moments and milestones of the organization throughout the last seven decades. In 2001, a similar IUHPE publication titled “A Long Way to Health Promotion, Through IUHPE Conferences 1951-2001” was released celebrating our 50th anniversary edited by Maria Antonio Modolo and Joyce Mamon. The 50th anniversary booklet can be viewed here.
These documents put on display IUHPE’s historical legacy and ensure that the work of the organization is documented for future generations. Looking back on many world conferences, acclaimed publications, influential members, and global projects it is evident that IUHPE has come a long way in shaping and contributing to the health promotion community. The 70th anniversary booklet encompasses many of our proud achievements and recaps the celebratory activities that were organized to honour this occasion.
Read the 70th Anniversary Booklet!
A special thank you the 2018-2021 IUHPE Executive Board who ensured that our 70th year of operation was celebrated with success and to Ann Pederson for putting together this meaningful piece reflective of our history and inspiring our future ahead.
